![]() ![]() The game takes players to an array of settings, beginning with a giant skate park made out of household objects in the human's room. After players customize their own avian avatars, they take up skateboarding to try to improve the human's life, either by completing menial tasks or just reigniting their love for skateboarding. SkateBIRD, referred to hereafter as simply Skatebird, lets players into the world of small birds, who are the pets of an unnamed and absent human owner who is busy at their new job. While rough around the edges in a few places, SkateBIRD is an endlessly adorable and surprisingly complex addition to the world of skateboarding games, one that will charm gamers of any age and skill level. This made the very idea of Skatebird incredibly delightful to me, as it blends the mechanics of skate culture with adorable, neon-hued animal graphics - and, thankfully, the game itself has proven to be just as great. My accident-prone self isn't about to hit the skate park and try it out in real life, and I completely missed the boat on games like the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater franchise when they first came out. It’s fun and quirky, but when you’re in the heat of the moment trying to pull off one big move after another, the physics can be more than frustrating.Skateboarding is one of those sports where the artistry and culture have always fascinated me, but I've never had the opportunity to really explore that. Glass Bottom Games embraces these moments by allowing your bird to roll around on the surface. Simply put, there are times when the physics are wonky, and your bird does things out of your control. ![]() The same holds true when you’re spinning around in the air trying to stick a landing. After all, not completely feeling like you have control over what will happen next is a concern in any video game.Īnother issue I have with the game’s physics engine is how it always feels like I’m not entirely in control of how much speed I’m able to muster up. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but I could see why it could be to some. Other times your bird may nosedive off the board entirely. There are times when your bird gives up all hope and slowly starts to lean forward, crashing helplessly to the floor. With the camera tweaked, Skatebird‘s biggest flaw might now be the game’s less-than-stellar physics engine. Of course, you won’t have to collect those infamous five letters, but you will have to collect M-O-N-E-Y. For example, collecting S-K-A-T-E was always a popular one. Some may seem familiar to THPS and others may not. Throughout your endless attempt to help Big Friend, which is honestly less of a story and more of a guideline to help you unlock new locations, you will discover new challenges along the way. Glass Bottom Games delivers a story mode based on helping your “Big Friend” get back on track after presumably losing a job. Once you have your bird selected, the real journey begins. This is something you can change at any time and, right now, can only be obtained by skating around each level and finding each item on your own. Once you choose your bird, folks can equip their characters with different accessories like hats, glasses, necklaces, scarfs, capes, and so much more. Players can choose between other species of birds, ranging from hawks to pigeons, parrots, and everything in between. The story starts with you creating your fictional bird, and good news, there’s plenty of different options to choose from. ![]()
